Abstract
This study examines the relationship between globalisation and primary energy consumption using an unbalanced panel of 170 countries from 2000 to 2023. Employing fixed-effects models, the study finds that globalisation is positively associated with energy consumption. The positive relationship remains robust across alternative specifications. Further analysis of the three dimensions of globalisation shows that social globalisation has a significant positive association with energy consumption, whereas economic and political globalisation are not statistically significant. The findings suggest that the energy implications of globalisation may differ across its dimensions and that the additional energy demand associated with deeper international integration may outweigh potential efficiency gains.
