Abstract
The kidneys play an indispensable role in preserving the body’s internal balance by managing fluid and electrolyte levels. Key serum electrolytes sodium, potassium, calcium, and phosphate are essential for processes like fluid regulation, nerve signaling, muscle movement, and acid-base stability. Measuring these electrolytes is a cornerstone of assessing renal function, as disruptions in their levels often signal kidney dysfunction or disease. This review explores how serum electrolytes reflect renal physiology, the consequences of their imbalances in kidney disorders, and their importance in diagnosing, treating, and tracking renal conditions. We also touch on current techniques for measuring serum electrolytes and their practical value in clinical settings. Grasping the connection between electrolytes and kidney function is vital for tailoring treatments, improving patient outcomes, and avoiding complications tied to electrolyte disturbances.
